CITIZENS*

A Skin Mutts interview photo project that explores people’s cultural identity in relation to (one of) their home(s), the city of Brussels.

What if, instead of "Where are you from?", we asked "Where are you a local?". This would tell us so much more about who and how similar we are.

– Taiye Selasi

A city is where different people, languages and traditions come together, creating intersectional communities that often share the same spaces. Finding your place in one might be hard, especially when there are concrete issues such as discrimination, language barriers, immigration and nationality laws, etc. Yet at the same time, the city can set the stage to find joy in shared communities, to be a part of cultural exchanges and to help in discovering yourself.

CITIZENS* is a Skin Mutts project that explores people’s cultural identity in relation to (one of) their home(s), the city of Brussels.

*For us, a citizen is someone who knows the place, has memories and experiences tied to the city and has created a home for themselves. This is regardless of their legal status, whether or not they were born here or if they came here at a later age.

The expo will be open from the 20th to the 27th of May at Pianofabriek, Brussels, where you'll have the chance to read the beautiful stories that people shared with us, and maybe even finding some answers for yourself!
